Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership Wins again at the Community Rail Awards

Written by EdnaW on . Posted in Latest News

The Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership’s initiative with Oaklands College was designed to get young people involved within the local community as well as the local railway heritage. The project asked students to create a presentation on how best to rejuvenate passenger growth on the line. This resulted in fresh ideas which were presented before a London Midland panel at their Head Offices.
The Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership won 2nd prize with this project in the category ‘Involving children and Young People’ at the National Community Rail Awards held at The Roundhouse Derby on 5th October 2017.
Edna Woname, Abbey Line CRP Officer said ‘It was great to see the students work so hard to come out with such fantastic ideas. I am particularly glad that our work as a Partnership has been recognised once again and grateful for the continued support of our passengers, volunteers, Rail user group and members of the Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership’.
Faye Lambert, head of community rail at London Midland, said: “Winning these awards is the result of lots of hard work that has gone on over the past year. The projects have involved people of all ages, faiths and cultures who have embraced the opportunity to be part of making their local railway better for everyone. Even though each project is individual in its own way, they all have the same goal at their heart: helping people to take pride in their local area.
“All of our adopters and community partners are incredibly passionate about what they do and it is this enthusiasm that makes community rail work so well; it’s wonderful to see their work recognised at the awards amongst such stiff competition. Everyone should be incredibly proud of their efforts’.

The Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership is very excited to announce that two of our entries, Best Community Engagement Event – ‘Abbey Line CRP Fun Day’ and Involving Children and Young People – ‘Oaklands College Marketing Project’, have been shortlisted in this year’s Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP) Community Rail Awards.

The awards, which are now in their 13th year, recognise the important but often unsung work carried out by community rail partnerships and station adoption groups, amongst others, who provide a welcome social and economic contribution, with their activities, to their communities.

The winners will be revealed at the awards gala dinner and presentation evening held by ACoRP, at The Roundhouse in Derby next month.

New bus service for St. Albans station

A new bus service linking St Albans’ railway stations and the city centre has been launched.

The Abbey Shuttle connects the St Albans Abbey Station and St Albans City Station via St Peter’s Street with the timetable scheduled to coincide with train arrivals and departures.

The service is a 12-month pilot funded by a £129k grant from the Department for Transport. All profits from the service will be reinvested in the route and if successful the contract will extend past the one year trial project.

Derrick Ashley, Cabinet Member for Transport, said:

“With very few bus services scheduled around train timetables this new route will make passenger transport an even more convenient and attractive option.”

“We want to see better connections between different modes of travel in Hertfordshire and we are pushing the Government and transport operators to improve these links.”

“We hope that the Abbey Shuttle will encourage more people to leave their cars at home, which will be good for both traffic congestion and air quality in St Albans.”
